EXAMPLE.
Introduction
The goal of this
report is to describe and evaluate my six weeks’ experience at the Muirwood
Clinic and to make recommendations for the future.
About the clinic
The Muirwood Clinic
is one of the most prestigious psychiatric clinics in Canada, dating back to
1935. It employs around 200 employees at its premises, among whom 75 have
professional degrees. The Clinic provides facilities for all kinds of
psychiatric and therapy patients, along with de-toxification facilities.
My work experience
During my six weeks
with the Muirwood Clinic, I was assigned to three different departments.
Outpatient facility
My first placement
was in the outpatient facility. Here I learned how to receive the outpatients
who were coming for their therapy sessions. I helped with setting up
appointments over the phone, and also answered questions via the phones. I
also had general receptionist duties for the therapists, psychologist, and
psychiatrists who were running the sessions.
Drug de-toxification
facility
I spent two weeks
observing group sessions led by various therapists. I also helped the
therapists write up their reports on patient progress and session sumaries.
In-patient
dormitories
During my final two
weeks, I worked as a daytime receptionist in the in-patient dormitories. In
this section, you could find all kinds of patients who were staying at the
clinic for up to a month. I was assigned to coordinating the visits of
friends and family who came during the afternoon hours to visit patients.
General comments
On the whole, I
found my time at the Muirwood Clinic extremely beneficial to my formation.
The staff were very helpful, and I obained a good understanding of how such a
clinic functions. However, I believe I would have benefited more if m work
experience had been for a longer time.
Conclusion
To sum up, the
Muirwood Clinic is an ideal place for psychology students to get work
experience. I have no hesitation in recommending that we send other students
to the Clinic in the future.
